Central Indiana Racquet Club Round-Up
Whether you are a beginner looking to get started, or an experienced player looking for clinics and competition, here is the skinny on the tennis facilities in and around the Indianapolis area.
Pearson Automotive Tennis Club
Phone: (317) 559-7100
The Pearson Automotive Tennis Club in Zionsville, IN opened in February 2017 with eight tennis courts, guest lounge, viewing platform, and locker rooms. It is the first such complex built in the Indianapolis area in 25 years.
Number of courts:
8 indoor / 0 outdoor (Zionsville High School courts are located adjacent to the property) / 0 pickleball
Childcare & Amenities:
Childcare not offered. Amenities include free wifi and guest lounge.
Baseline review:
PATC is one of the more innovative tennis clubs in the area, with cameras on courts to live stream USTA tournaments that they host, their logo on tennis balls, and a racquet bar for stringing. Located in Zionsville, it's a little off the beaten path but proven to be worth the drive. Their well kept locker rooms and guest lounge/viewing area make this club one of our top picks. Their junior program is set up similar to USTA tournaments, not so much categorized by age, but by ability, starting with red ball at the age of 2.5 (with a parent on court). They are also home to Smith Tennis, a high performance junior program led by Stephanie Hazlett-Smith and Bryan Smith, two of the area's top coaches.
What you're eating on that side of town:
Walk Zionsville's brick Main Street and stop at Rosie's Place for brunch and butter cookies (3.3 miles away).
Carmel Racquet Club
Phone: (317) 844-1177
Carmel Racquet Club opened in 1971 and is centrally located in the north Indianapolis suburb of Carmel.
Number of courts:
12 indoor / 6 outdoor clay courts / 2 platform tennis courts / 1 racquetball court / 12 pickleball courts
Childcare & Amenities:
Yes, childcare is offered. Pre-registration required. CRC houses Studio Re, a barre studio upstairs. CRC does have a pool used for swimming lessons and water aerobics.
Baseline review:
The programming at Carmel Racquet Club is hard to beat. They do a great job of offering tennis clinics for all abilities all throughout the day. They have multiple CIWITL teams that most women enjoy playing as opposed to just a clinic, with matches once a month. Like most clubs, juniors pretty much take over in the evenings with clinics for little ones as young as 4 years old. They also have the most versatile offerings of courts, which include platform, outdoor clay, pickleball and racquetball. Another fun fact about CRC, is that the distance between courts is more than most other clubs, so be prepared to play with the nets closed between courts. You'll have to have a crazy angle to get anyone into the net. Lastly, mom's rejoice as they offer both childcare and a coffee machine on the way out!
What you're eating on that side of town:
The acai bowl at Garden Table in Midtown Carmel (1.6 miles away).
Community Sports and Wellness
CSW, a 123,000 square foot sports facility, opened in late 2021 offering just about anything you can think of that will keep you and your family active from gymntastics to pickleball. Located just off of I-69, it is the furthest north facility we'll be highlighting and a very popular place to play for the ever growing Fishers, Fortville, and Pendleton communities.
Number of courts:
8 indoor / 0 outdoor / 6 pickleball courts
Childcare and Amenities:
Childcare is available and 2 hours per day is included with a family membership. The amenities for a full tennis membership are abundant and include everything from group fitness classes to use of the flex gyms. Court time and use of the ball machines are also included in the tennis membership.
Baseline review:
We love playing at CSW. Although it is a bit of a hike from the Indianapolis area, it continues to be worth the drive. Grab a snack or coffee to fuel up before hitting the court. Courts can be recorded through the use of Playsight technology, a Sports AI and Automated Production Technology company. Simply download the app and record your match! Viewing at CSW is great, with bleachers and chairs on the upper level overlooking the ends of all the courts, giving you the perfect vantage points for judging other people's line calls. Although we haven't personally used the childcare, it looks super clean and organized, and is centrally located within the facility.
What you're eating on that side of town:
Visit downtown Pendleton (1.6 miles away) and we recommend the Ultimate Veggie sandwich at Viva La Juice.
Indianapolis Racquet Club Dean Road
The first ball was served in 1965 at Indianapolis Racquet Club - Dean Road.
Number of courts:
16 indoor / 0 outdoor / 0 pickleball (and don't plan to add any due to tennis tournaments they host)
Childcare & Amenities:
Childcare no longer offered. Members do have access to a workout room.
Baseline review:
Indianapolis Racquet Club Dean is conveniently located on the north side of Indianapolis. With 16 courts, they have extensive programming for both juniors and adults, as well as offering many drop in options for non-members. As one of central Indiana's most established racquet clubs, they also host many USTA tournaments throughout the year. They just opened their newly renovated, state of the art locker rooms with more updates on the way. The cooling fans at the back of the courts can make it a bit hard to hear, so make sure you know the score! Also, watch your lobs down the line, the overhead lights could get in your way! Viewing is decent at IRC, as you can go upstairs at one end of the facility to give you a better vantage point for watching. They also will sometimes allow spectators in the walkway behind the courts.
What you're eating on that side of town:
Don't miss the Knife and Fork Cobb Salad from Doc B's at The Fashion Mall (0.9 miles away).
Jewish Community Center
Phone: (317) 251-9467
For more than 100 years, the JCC Indianapolis has been a neighborhood and community resource. From its start in 1914 in downtown Indianapolis as a place for Jewish immigrants to eat, shower and socialize to its current location on Hoover Road, the JCC has been dedicated to serving the Indianapolis community and responsive to its needs.
Number of tennis courts:
3 indoor / 0 outdoor / 3 pickleball
Childcare & Amenities:
Childcare not offered. The JCC offers a wide variety of amenities from an outdoor waterpark to yoga classes.
Baseline review:
The JCC is great for a family or individual looking for a community experience offering more than just tennis. The security is great as guests are required to show a driver's license and obtain a sticker with your driver's license photo. Pay attention when you're driving there, the roads need some work and you may find yourself hitting more potholes than you hit aces.
What you're eating on that side of town:
The Turkey Avocado Sandwich on a croissant at Illinois Street Food Emporium (2.6 miles away).
Indianapolis Racquet Club East
4901 N. Shadeland Avenue / Indianapolis, IN 46226
Phone: (317) 545-2228
Indianapolis Racquet Club Dean Road purchased the Northeast Tennis Club in 1978 and turned it in to IRC East, becoming it's second location.
Number of courts:
8 indoor / 0 outdoor / 8 pickleball including pickleball machine
Childcare & Amenities:
Childcare not offered, no other notable amenities.
Baseline review:
Indianapolis Racquet Club East is easily accessible as it is a stone's throw off of I-465 at the Shadeland Avenue exit. The front desk staff is helpful, friendly and organized. Don't miss the vintage framed wall decor throughout the lobby and locker rooms. A word of caution: as of summer of 2023, courts are not air conditioned so be prepared to bring plenty of water and a sweat towel. We recommend playing in something lightweight, loose fitting, and sweat wicking such as the Swifty Workout Tank. If you're visiting the club to spectate, be advised there is very limited viewing and seating through a window off of court one. If you're attempting to watch courts 3-8, bring your binoculars!

Jockamo Upper Crust Pizza near Fort Ben (3 miles away).

WIRC is home to the IUPUI teams in Indianapolis and offers a place to play for those living on the west side. They do offer guest rates for non members and offer numerous special events throughout the year. Their Pickleball Eclipse party looks interesting, and they also host multiple single day UTR Matchplay events. Viewing is just ok, as you watch from the middle of the three courts and can look either way. Outdoor viewing is great with a two story deck. What you're eating on that side of town:
There aren't a great deal of lunch options around WIRC. Head 10 miles northwest to Trader's Point Creamery, or 6 miles east to Gallery Pastry Shop, and you won't regret either.
UIndy Tennis Center
The University of Indianapolis men's and women's tennis programs are proud to call the UIndy Tennis Center home.
Number of courts:
7 indoor / 0 outdoor / 6 pickleball courts
Childcare and amenities:
Childcare not available. No other amenities to note.
Baseline review:
UIndy Tennis Center is the place to play for south siders. Located just inside I-465, UIndy (also called "The Bubble") draws tennis fanatics from Greenwood, Franklin, and Center Grove. There is a lounge and vending machines, but no other amenities. Viewing is not ideal as there are a few rows of bleachers at each end, that sit very close to the end courts, so keep your voice down and your head up to watch for wayward ground strokes.
What you're eating on that side of town:
Take your kids home some sugar cookies from Kim's Kakery (2.8 miles away).
We hope this round up was helpful and encourages you to pick up a racquet, call a friend, and have fun on the courts! Indianapolis has a lot to offer for both members and guests, so get after it!
love all,
kristyn
